How Does Copper Granulation Work?

1. Wire Feeding

Insulated copper wire is introduced into the processing system. Depending on the system and material, the wire may be fed manually, by conveyor, or through a larger automated material-handling system.

2. Shredding or Cutting

The wire is reduced into smaller pieces. This allows the separation process to expose the copper contained inside the insulation.

3. Granulation

The material is further processed into small copper and insulation particles. The size of the finished granules depends on the machine configuration and screen size.

4. Separation

The copper and insulation are separated using differences in physical properties such as density and weight. Air separation and other technologies can be used to remove lighter insulation from heavier copper.

5. Final Copper Product

The result is a concentrated copper granule or "copper chop" product that can be collected for sale.


What Types of Wire Can Be Granulated?

For example, if 1,000 pounds of insulated wire contains 60% copper by weight, the theoretical copper content is approximately:

1,000 lbs × 60% = 600 lbs of copper

Actual recovered copper will depend on the machine, material preparation, separation efficiency, and the amount of copper lost with the insulation or other outputs.
